What is Openness in the Big Five Personality Traits?
Openness is one of the Big Five personality traits, a widely recognized psychological framework based on the Five-Factor Model for personality. The other traits are Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism (OCEAN). Each trait influences how we behave and react in different situations.
Openness to experience includes a range of actions and attitudes related to curiosity, imagination, and willingness to experiment.
Openness is sub-divided into six facets, each contributing to your overall level:
- Imagination pertains to your ability to think creatively and visualize new ideas. A high score in this area may translate to a love for writing, drawing, or daydreaming. A low score could indicate a preference for routine and familiar experiences.
- Artistic interests refer to your love for art and beauty in all its forms. If you score high in this facet, you often appreciate and engage in creative activities such as painting, music, and literature.
- Emotionality measures how deeply you feel, with high scorers being in touch with their emotions and able to connect with others easily.
- Adventurousness involves your willingness to embrace uncertainty, take risks, and try new experiences.
- Intellect is about how much you enjoy exploring new concepts and engaging in deep thinking. High scorers in this category love learning and often engage in intellectual debates and problem-solving activities.
- Liberalism, unrelated to politics, measures how open you are to new ideas, changes, and viewpoints.

Measuring Openness
High Openness manifests as your curiosity, creativity, and eagerness to try new things. You enjoy exploring different ideas, art, and cultures. You are open to change and appreciate the richness of diverse experiences.
On the other hand, if you have low Openness, you prefer routine, resist change, and seek familiarity.

Let’s talk money.
Does the idea of an unconventional career path or financial plan seem scary? Openness can change that.
Exploring new paths and opportunities broadens your skills, enhancing your earning potential and job satisfaction.
